MUSIC FOR YOUR EARS | REVIEW Who am I? By The Badly Behaved

The Badly Behaved is an electronic synth band hailing from the vibrant city of
Berlin. Their music is a fusion of synth-drenched melodies, harmonies, and strong bass
lines, creating a contemporary and modern sound. Their latest single, Who am I? serves
as the title track for their 2022 studio album and has been reimagined and mixed by
renowned British producer Jamie Sellers for a new single release in 2023.
The band’s musical style is inspired by a diverse range of artists, from
commercial giants like the Pet Shop Boys and Röyksopp to niche talents like Lauer,
Marvin & Guy, and Zombies in Miami. This amalgamation of influences is evident in
their sound, which balances familiar synth sounds from the ‘80s and ‘90s with
contemporary twists. Lead vocalist Stewart Irving’s voice carries the song’s emotional
depth effectively, giving life to the introspective lyrics. The spoken-word digressions in
the track also add a touch of Pet Shop Boys’ nostalgia while reinforcing the
introspective theme.
Who am I? is about a successful performer who is unsecure about how the word
sees them and how they see themselves. The lyrics, however, are not limited to people
in the world of performance art and could equally apply to anybody, which means that
each and every person who listens to the track will find it immediately identifiable and
relevant. Who hasn’t asked themselves the question ‘who am I?’ at some point in their
life? Who hasn’t questioned who and where they are and where they are going in life?
Richard’s self-penned lyrics often reflect on how we function as a society and the
hypocrisy that he sees and experiences. The songs, as well as the name of the band,
have a lot to do with not always fitting in, but still being able to express yourself and
say what you want to say. This blending of personal struggles with societal issues is a
recurring motif in The Badly Behaved’s music.
In conclusion, Who am I? by The Badly Behaved is a thought-provoking
synthpop gem that blends introspective lyrics with appealing melodies and rhythmic
beats. The band’s ability to infuse their music with contemporary relevance while
drawing inspiration from past musical eras is commendable. With its irresistible dance
vibes and significant themes, Who am I? is a welcome addition to The Badly Behaved’s
discography.
The Badly Behaved plan to release a cover of Bobby O’s She has a way and are
also working on other material for release later in 2023. Their unique and distinctive
sound coupled with universally relatable lyrics make their sound a must-listen for 2023.
