Vancouver’s truly dynamic duo ‘Crash World’ are a love letter to the past and an ode to tomorrow. A sonic tapestry of two voices and six strings by the talented and harmonious Glen MacLeod and Graham MacDonald. Their distinctive sounds fuse the poetic whimsy of the ‘60s and the alluring boldness of the ’70s with a refreshing contemporary flare. Crash World sends a nostalgic message in a bottle to music lovers. The band was built on an affinity for infusing ragged beauty into songwriting and an uncompromising musicality. They are inspired by stripping their music to its most vulnerable state as both artists have been primarily immersed in bands with massive repertoires that cross diverse genres. Don’t say ‘Picky Hippers’ are a quintessential kiwi band! You could, they did form on the south island of New Zealand and they do play an infectious blend of funk, soul and classic rock that echoes of the greats who came before. But there’s something……else. Maybe it’s the fact that 2 of the 5 aren’t kiwis at all? An international flavour if you will. Whatever it is, Picky Hippers have it in spades. The band’s debut album Full Flavour Behaviour jumps with heavy grooves, a hint of jazz and a little punk rock energy. Recorded at the band’s own Boatshed Studios in Kaikoura and mixed by Dallas Cosmas at Prototype Musique in Melbourne, Full Flavour Behavior brings together the band’s many influences and creates something truly unique. This makes Picky Hippers the new quintessential kiwi band to watch. This is a song about the realisation that everything happens once and all that we really have is now. It’s also a song about making the most out of life and living it on our own terms, as it explores things that, from my standpoint as a writer, matter the most – such as love, friendships, and creating memories and experiences.
