She’s been dubbed “Britains Answer to Taylor Swift” by The Daily Mail, Mariella Frostrup on Times Radio and the legendary Brad Paisley but with her new release “When The Lights Went Out”, Bailey Tomkinson showcases a west coast Kernowfornia sound all of her own.

Cornwall has never been cooler, from staycation holidays, to hosting the G7 Summit, overtaking London as the most searched for location for home movers, Kernow is never far from international headlines. So, it was inevitable that the thriving art and music scene dubbed “Kernowfornia” would see major talent emerge from inside the Duchy.

Surfing a wave of national press attention following her last single “Bright Red” which was an outspoken take on sustainability and social justice issues and reached #1 in the Singer/Songwriter and Video charts, St. Ives based singer/songwriter Bailey, has moved the Kernowfornia sound front and centre with her new release “When The Lights Went Out”.

Fusing surf rock, Americana and pop to create an authentic, hooky sound that evokes the UK’s West Coast and its sun-kissed cool, Bailey has proven to be one of the hits of the UK’s summer festival season and the anthem “When The Lights Went Out” is already a firm favourite with audiences. It’s the first track from an upcoming EP set for release in early 2022.

“My previous single Bright Red was much more a political song so the music letting the message breathe was important. Whereas with “When The Lights Went Out” I let loose musically a bit more. It’s more of a Killers style anthem this time. It’s the first record I took the band into the studio with me on, and that’s contributed to a bigger, fuller, rockier, vibe.

“This record is a reflection of where I come from musically – there are elements of Springsteen, Sam Fender and Weezer and also of my environment too – that’s the Kernowfornia sound, sort of like a sun and surf filter on my musical influences”.

“When The Lights Went Out” is a song about those times when you think you’re in a relationship but the other party doesn’t. A lot of people have had that experience where you’re messaging somebody, thinking it’s going well, only to find he’s talking to 3 other girls at the same time so I hope it will resonate with people’s own personal experiences”.
